The Learner wellbeing of students has always been discussed, but seemingly never in the spotlight when it comes to ongoings in educational institutions. But now the focus is shifting, awareness regarding the mental health of students and employees is at an all-time high since the onset of Covid19.

Student wellbeing data released by the Office for National Statistics suggests that the majority of students have witnessed a deterioration in their mental health since the start of term last Autumn. With 63% of students reporting a worsening of their wellbeing and mental health since the start of the autumn term last year, it is clear that more needs to be done.

Loneliness is also a factor, the striking ONS report found that students were also disproportionately likely to have experienced loneliness during the term period: 26% reported experiencing loneliness.

It’s not just University students either, here at We Are HR we know that trying to excel in a CIPD course can be difficult and stressful when you still have a job to think about. That’s not to say you can’t find just one of the tough! Many factors can contribute to a deterioration in mental health, and it’s nothing to be ashamed about – but it is important to take action for your own sake.

As part of every We Are HR course, our students receive access to the Mr Motivator Club. We have another article published here, but the main thing to note is that this club is designed to help! We make learner wellbeing a priority, and we know how easy it is to forget to make yourself a priority sometimes.

The Mr Motivator Club reminds you to help yourself. And it makes it fun. We found ourselves at our most productive when Mr Motivator got us up from our desk and had us move around. Student wellbeing is made a priority and access to this club ensure that stress levels are controlled and moods are boosted – sometimes you just need to relax and be reminded of your self-worth!

Diet, lifestyle, exercise – these are all things you can do at home to improve your mood, and therefore life! It’s no secret, but it’s also easier said than done. That’s why it helps to have reminders and add some fun to self-care.

The experience of students over the past year and a half has at least increased awareness of mental health problems faced by students, and educational institutions should now be doing more to focus on learner wellbeing.

As a newly accredited CIPD centre, We Are HR is committed to ensuring our students receive the full scope of the learner wellbeing systems we have in place – so do head over to our site if you think it’s time to gain a new qualification and take your career to the next step.

Take care,

We Are HR team
