What is PRINCE2® Project Management Foundation?

PRINCE2® Project Management Foundation (Version 7) is designed to give you a clear understanding of the PRINCE2® method – a structured approach to managing projects.

You’ll learn the terminology, principles, practices and processes that underpin PRINCE2®, while developing an understanding of how project roles, responsibilities and decisions fit together throughout the project lifecycle.

The Foundation level focuses on understanding the method, giving you the knowledge to recognise how PRINCE2® works and contribute effectively within a project environment.

In simple terms:

PRINCE2® Foundation teaches you how the PRINCE2® method works.

It gives you a structured way to understand:

Why a project is being undertaken
Who is responsible for what
What needs to happen and when
How risks, issues and progress are managed
When decisions need to be made
How a project moves from initiation to closure

Is PRINCE2® Foundation Right for You?

You don’t need “Project Manager” in your job title to benefit from structured project management knowledge.

PRINCE2® Foundation is relevant to people starting their project management journey as well as professionals who contribute to projects as part of a wider role.

Aspiring Project Managers

Build a recognised foundation of project management knowledge as you develop towards project-focused roles.

Project Coordinators & Support

Understand project terminology, responsibilities, processes and how structured projects operate.

Team Leaders & Managers

Develop greater understanding of project planning, governance, risk, progress and decision-making.

Business & Operations Professionals

Build project management knowledge that can support implementation, improvement and operational projects.

Change & Transformation Professionals

Understand how a structured project method can support organisational change and transformation.

Professionals Working on Projects

Formalise and strengthen the project knowledge you've developed through practical experience.

Already managing projects without being called a Project Manager?

From implementing a new system to launching a service, improving a process or supporting organisational change, many professionals are already involved in projects. PRINCE2® can provide a structured framework for that work.

What Will You Learn?

The Foundation course introduces the core components of the PRINCE2® Project Management method and how they work together to support structured project delivery.

7 Principles

Understand the guiding principles that underpin PRINCE2® and help ensure the method is being applied appropriately.

These include concepts such as maintaining continued business justification, learning from experience and maintaining a focus on products.

7 Practices

Explore the important aspects of project management that need to be addressed throughout the project.

These include areas such as:

Business Case • Organising • Plans • Quality • Risk • Issues • Progress

7 Processes

Understand how PRINCE2® provides a structured progression through the project lifecycle, from getting a project started through delivery and ultimately closure.

You’ll develop an understanding of what happens, when it happens and who is responsible.

PRINCE2® current Foundation learning objectives explicitly centre on the seven principles, practices and processes, alongside people, roles and responsibilities.

Built for the Way Projects Work Today

PRINCE2® has evolved over time, and Version 7 retains its structured project management approach while placing greater emphasis on the realities of delivering projects in modern organisations.

People at the Centre

Greater emphasis is placed on the people involved in projects and how effective collaboration contributes to successful delivery.

Sustainability

Sustainability has greater prominence within project performance and decision-making.

Digital & Data

Version 7 recognises the importance of data and digital technology — including where data comes from, how it is used and how its integrity and security are maintained.

Designed to be Tailored

PRINCE2® can be adapted to different organisations, project environments, scales and levels of complexity.

Modern & Flexible

The method reflects increasingly rapid change and the need for organisations to deliver projects effectively in evolving environments.
